September Girls - Cursing The Sea Album Launch. Hosted by Jessie Ward O'Sullivan and PaulaJane Cullen.

Cursing the Sea is September Girls’ – the band is made up of Paula Cullen (bass, vocals), Caoimhe Derwin (guitar, vocals), Lauren Kerchner (keyboards, vocals), Jessie Ward (guitar, vocals) and Sarah Grimes (drums) – debut album following their formation in 2011 and release of a handful of songs and EPs (one of which was released by PINS’ Haus of. Pins label) which brought them to the attention of Fortuna POP! While Big Star and the Bangles is a good starting point to cover the band’s jangle, the intensity comes from the added darkness pulled from another handful of clear influences like Phil . .

Yet another fuzzy "Girls" group shows on their debut album that they can hold their ow. After a couple of years of vinyl and cassette releases, this winter they put out their debut full-length, Cursing the Sea. Referred to in their press kit simply by their first names (which I admit I felt charmingly informal), Laura, Jessie, Caoimhe, Paula and Sarah's first offering didn't do much upon initial listenings to distinguish itself from the noise-revivalist pack for me. The lockstep rhythm, echoey guitars and hushed lyrics all kinda ran together. There are still a number of things that September Girls could work on. I did have a bit of a chuckle at the press kit's florid descriptions of various songs' lyrical content because, not unlike the guitars, the vocals are mixed into a hazy middle ground that makes it difficult to draw a distinct bead on them.

September Girls seem to exist in a universe swathed in monochrome, bathed in black and white. It’s one framed by familiar references – Spector pop, Krautrock, The Jesus and Mary Chain – but displayed a fresh way. Spraying their razor-sharp cool across a series of singles, debut album ‘Cursing The Sea’ arrives in menacing form. There’s a sense of ennui in ‘Another Love Song’, of railing against the restraints that define them. Heartbeats’ is visceral psychedelia, the sound of a bad trip soundtracked by a feedback wail
