The Blackening is the sixth album by American band Machine Head. Released on March 27, 2007 in the . The Blackening sold 16,000 units in its first week, and became Machine Head's second highest charting release at number 54 on the Billboard 200, and charted in the Top 20 throughout many countries in the rest of the world. The Blackening has been certified silver by the BPI for sales in the UK in excess of 60,000 copies.

The Blackening is Machine Head’s sixth studio album, released through Roadrunner Records. About The Blackening 1 contributor. But The Blackening is no mere comeback: it’s the nearly perfect testament to the musical, personal and commercial journey that MACHINE HEAD has taken and survived all these years, their sound and integrity restored and intact. It’s also one of the purest, finest, most powerful expressions of modern heavy metal released in this young but already blackened century. Lyrically, The Blackening does not shy away from tough subjects; even Robb Flynn said that the band did not want to receive airplay.
Machine Head takes risks by bringing out an album of only 8 tracks, but a duration of 61 minutes. Be not too sceptic by seeing the duration of the tracks, because this opus is really good. The Blackening" is the most technical, the most popular album of Machine Head and the soloes of Phil Demmel and Robb Flynn's guitars are more numerous than usually. The new Machine Head arrived. We like or we don't like. This album was to be 2007's, "The Blackening"

Machine Head's The Blackening is an over-the-top rage and pummelfest that proves a gamerchanger in heavy metal. Not only does it contain the visceral qualities the band has displayed since commecning its recording and touring career but the growth in songwriting, dynamics and production place MH in their own league as perhaps the most important mainstream genre act on the planet bar none. The record starts out unlikely enough (thankfully) with a left-of-center call to arms for the youth of their nation to not blindly accept the words (and threats) of "patriotic brutes.

Overall, Machine Head's 2007 offering and sixth album, The Blackening, is probably one of the weakest, most overrated albums of the year. While I can se many enjoying it, due to its horrid song writing, equally unpleasant vocals, and aside from a few moments in every song, mediocre instrumental performances, I will not be one of these people. I'm not sure if Machine Head can do better than this, as I have not really listened to any Machine Head in the past, but one would assume they can as The Blackening never really does anything to warrant more than two listens.
