J Mascis + The Fog was formed by J Mascis after the break up of Dinosaur Jr. The project released two albums; 2000's More Light and 2002's Free So Free. After fulfilling his contractual obligations to Blanco y Negro in the UK and Sire/Reprise in the US, Mascis holed up in his home studio in Amherst, MA, which he named Bob's Place after his pet bulldog.

I never tire of playing it. And after seeing J perform it live a few months ago in Houston, I doubt that will ever change (If you ever get the chance to see him play, DO IT!

More Light is the debut album by alternative rock band J Mascis + The Fog, released on October 24, 2000. The album was recorded and mixed at "Bob's Place", Mascis's home studio in his native Amherst, Massachusetts. The album title was inspired by the Hindu "hugging saint", Ammachi (also referenced on "Ammaring"). It features Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine as well as Guided By Voices frontman Robert Pollard on some songs.

The best tracks find Mascis sticking his head up out of the murk of guitar noise and lazy melody to deliver slices of snappy grunge pop: "Sameday" bounces between minor-key whine and major-key stomp as Mascis croaks his way through a stoner's lament, while the bouncy "Can't I Take This On" shows that there's a lighter side to. the dude's brooding mewl. Even with production help from Kevin Shields, his guitar skronk is only ever-present background buzz, but noise is only half the point: too lazy to find a new bag of tricks, Mascis is squeezing every drop.
