Lillian Leach Boyd, whose wistful lead vocals with a 1950s Bronx group called the Mellows helped pave the way for women in soul and R&B, died Friday at Calvary Hospital. She was 76 and had recently been admitted for cancer treatment. The Mellows - named because almost all their repertoire was ballads - group took the music very seriously, she said, practicing "five or six days a week" on standards, gospel songs and some original material written by Johnson. Several of their songs have become vocal group classics over the years, including "Smoke From Your Cigarette," "Yesterday's Memories" and "How Sentimental Can I Be?"
