Moreover, the intellectual revival of Italy had just blossomed into sudden glory with Dante, and Dante was succeeded by Petrarch and Boccaccio. But when the types are presented to us in medieval array, as they lived and moved five hundred years ago, the Middle Ages become as living and real as the twentieth century. Those familiar faces and figures make their surroundings real and actual. We are no longer guessing what sort of person a knight might have been or was likely to be; what manner of a man was a parish priest, a rural squire, a merchant-what a prioress was like or a bourgeoise dame of independent means.

The LiederNet Archive is the world's largest reference archive of texts and translations of art songs and choral works. We have been online since May 24, 1995. 152,383 vocal pieces have been catalogued.

On Parle qui veut the performers embrace the exuberant style of flourishing melodies which was fashionable in the north of Italy in the fourteenth century. In contrast, a different kind of expressivity is required for the sober and succinct aesthetic of the works with French provenance. Sollazzo creates a pure, bright sound, enhanced by the songs’ incredibly open textures and the use of the rarely heard Pythagorean temperament. All in all, this represents a remarkable debut.

By the High Middle Ages, these instruments were also used for secular music which primarily emerged from the troubadours of southern France, especially Provencal. Secular music from this period, given its association with the troubadours, is noted for its ideals of courtly love and chivalry. Some of the most notable examples of medieval songs are listed below. The Foy Porter is one of the songs composed by the famed French composer, Guillaume de Machaut. Machaut composed music in 14th century France and was one of the foremost composers of the time. The Foy Porter is a monophonic song composed by him which is a beautifully intricate love poem. Like most medieval songs dealing with chivalric love, this song is about the ideals of courtly love and states how such pure love could move the protagonist of the poem to become a better person. By 1350 English was again assuming the position of the speech of culture, its grammar was still further simplified; its inflectional endings were lost. Medieval literature was disseminated in two ways. The first and more permanent method was though copying by scribes some didactic or religious works. Collections of stories, both secular and sacred, articulated into a general framework, had been numerous and popular in the Middle Ages and early Italian Renaissance, which inherited the taste for them, had enlarged their scope and humanized their content. Chaucer developed the frame-story of the journey, dialogue, and interactions of Canterbury pilgrims to such a degree that the frame itself approximated the form of an organized plot.

Sequentia, founded by Benjamin Bagby and the late Barbara Thornton in 1977, has been one of the world's most popular medieval ensembles. They have been active ambassadors for the music, and incorporate male & female vocal ensembles, as well as instrumentalists, depending on the program. Their signature work has certainly been the preparation and recording of the complete works of Hildegard von Bingen. In terms of performance style, the Sequentia founders were students of Thomas Binkley and continue with his basic ideas.
