Adderley cannonball quintet legends live. However I think this is the first time Adderley was recorded performing the Dizzy Gillespie classic "Blue 'n' Boogie" which is performed at an incredibly fast pace and is one of the many highlights on this CD. Another highlight is the tune "Painted Desert". It is another classic Joe Zawinul blues number and is arguably the best song overall. A "must have" CD for any Cannonball Adderley or Joe Zawinul fan. The two additional tracks added on the CD reissue, an alternate take of "Lisa" and ". were discovered in the mid-1980s.

Cannonball Adderley was born Julian Edwin Adderley on September 15, 1928 and died August 8, 1975. During his lifetime he was well-known as a jazz alto saxophonist of the hard bop era of the 1950s and 1960s. Cannonball was the brother of jazz cornetist Nat Adderley, a longtime member of his band. The Black Messiah is a live album recorded at The Troubadour in Los Angeles, California in 1970 featuring performances by Adderley's Quintet with Nat Adderley, George Duke, Walter Booker and Roy McCurdy with guest appearances by Airto Moreira, Mike Deasy, Ernie Watts, Alvin Batiste, and Buck Clarke. After many years of being out of print, The Black Messiah was reissued in 2014 by Real Gone Music; the new 2CD reissue included liner notes by music journalist/blogger Bill Kopp.
