Haydn was never a keyboard virtuoso, but had a number of students for whom he composed piano sonatas.
Album · 2018 · 11 Songs. Haydn’s sonatas have emerged from the shadows to find life under the fingers of some magnificent modern pianists. Paul Lewis, perhaps inspired by his mentor Alfred Brendel, engages with a quartet of works, creations that abound not only with immense creativity and imagination but also with a truly life-affirming wit and humour. And Lewis doesn’t sell that side of Haydn short-his finger work sparkles, the lines are unfurled with supreme logic but he also brings a smile to the lips.
Haydn: Piano Sonatas No. .has been added to your Cart. There is the most delightful feel of improvisation and joy, most especially in Hoboken XVI 50, which is an unalloyed delight and source of both laughter as Haydn springs his surprises, and sheer wonder at the delighted and delightful creativity! Lewis has brought all these qualities out with peerless, seeming ease.
32, 40, 49, 50. Haydn's relationship with the keyboard was so intimate and inspirational that it enabled him to develop ideas of the most varied character. From the whimsical to the dramatic, this highly attractive music combines mischievousness, ingenuousness, eloquence and lyricism. Haydn's wealth of contrasts is interpreted with unique grace by Paul Lewis. I've wanted to explore the piano sonatas of Haydn in detail for some time. Paul Lewis talks about the Haydn’s piano sonatas: "I realised that I couldn't resist dedicating a few years to exploring Haydn and Brahms but felt that, in practice, the programmes would need another element to bring these two hugely contrasting composers together. That element wasn't too difficult to find.
