Super Fly is the third studio album by American soul musician Curtis Mayfield, released in July 1972 on Curtom Records. It was released as the soundtrack for the Blaxploitation film of the same name. Widely considered a classic of 1970s soul and funk music, Super Fly was a nearly immediate hit. Its sales were bolstered by two million-selling singles, "Freddie's Dead" (number 2 R&B charts, number 4 Pop charts) and the title track (number 5 R&B, number 8 Pop)

Unlike the common soundtrack, Superfly is a concept album known for its anti-drug and self-liberation themes, unlike the film, Mayfield holds a position far more critical, with socially aware lyrics about crime, poverty and drug abuse. However, the album lyric content doesn't distance itself from the film. The album starts with Little Child Runnin' Wild, a soul song about loneliness and drug addiction, the highlight in this one is its rich orchestration of violins and woodwind instruments. Being one of the few soundtracks to out-gross the film it accompanied, it surely demonstrates that Curtis Mayfield was a talented singer and songwriter.

Curtis Mayfield's score for Superfly was not only his greatest album but is one of the greatest soul albums of the renaissance of black music in the late sixties and early seventies. It ranks right up there with Hot Buttered Soul, What's Going On and Innervisions. It sold millions, produced two gold singles and was musically very influential just as the film itself was stylistically influential. Mayfield wrote beautiful music for this film and it was remarkably well-orchestrated. This is why you really need the album to appreciate it. In the film much of it is so in the background or appear only partially and only really listening to it brings out full power and intensity as well as the brilliant scoring. it's opens with organ and bongos and a screaming urban guitar, then staccato bursts of brass, mournful strings and a blues sax that underscore its tragic tale.
