Rex William Stewart (February 22, 1907 – September 7, 1967) was an American jazz cornetist best remembered for his work with the Duke Ellington orchestra. After stints with Elmer Snowden, Fletcher Henderson, Horace Henderson, McKinney's Cotton Pickers, and Luis Russell, Stewart joined the Ellington band in 1934, replacing Freddie Jenkins. Duke Ellington arranged many of his pieces to showcase Stewart's half-valve effects, muted sound, and forceful style.

Cornet master Rex Stewart was selected by Henri Chaix to choose the repertoire for their collaboration on this June 12th, 1966 session recorded in Baden, Switzerland, and produced by Arild Wideroe (this is the first CD issue of this music which was licensed originally for LP release in Europe on Polydor International). The second half of this CD features The Henri Chaix Orchestra's final performance (which does not include Rex Stewart) at the Montreux Festival on June 16th, 1971, and it's issued here for the first time.

Cornetist Rex Stewart, although a bit past his playing prime by 1966, adds plenty of energy, wit and creativity to the first nine selections which he performed in Switzerland with pianist Henri Chaix's orchestra. Most of the tunes were new or obscure numbers that have plenty of atmosphere and happiness. The most consistently rewarding soloist is the Johnny Hodges-inspired altoist Roger Zufferey although both Chaix and Stewart have their spots. Rex Stewart is also showcased playing humorous tonal distortions on his feature "Conversation Piece.
