Hoodlum Priest - Rebel Angel.

The Heart of Darkness was the debut album created by Hoodlum Priest. The album was minimally successful. It featured the first and only appearance of rapper Sevier, who left the band due to creative differences. During some time after the release of The Heart of Darkness, ZTT was bought out by Warner Bros, and the album was immediately deleted by request of Warner Bros's legal department.

The Heart of Darkness (1990). Album by Hoodlum Priest. Symphony No. 10 in E Minor (Movement One) by Dmitri Shostakovich (1951). O Fortuna by Carl Orff (1937). Ogi No Mato the Folding Fan as a Target by Ensemble Nipponia (1976). see 5 more connections.

Debut album from the Hoodlum Priest (musician Derek Thompson, of Irish background, but born and raised in London). Effectively a solo project, the album had little success: shortly after the album's release, the ZZT label was bought by Warner Bros, whose legal department immediately requested the album be deleted (because of its many samples) (see below). The cover art features a picture of an eyeless Tunisian. It's a great album, ranging over an eclectic mix of styles

I purchased Hoodlum Priest - Heart Of Darkness vinyl LP back in 1990 when it was released. It wasn't released in Denmark at that point but a import vinyl shop had it. I heard a couple of tracks and not only the album was sold, I was sold too. Years later I found the CD version too at low price. It helped to preserve the original vinyl :)Ever since, this album has been a great inspiration (I make some electronic music too) and one of my absolute all time favorite albums. I'll never stop being fascinated by this production. The use of movie samples are so well put together, gives the tracks a fantastic atmosphere and funny to suddenly find out where it came from when watching a movie years after. The compositions are unique and also far ahead of time. Now, 25 years after it's still an experience, a journey that make me notice new aspects. This album is a must-have if you like industrial, trip hop, 90's hip hop, electronica, great distorted guitar riffs or innovative use of samples. Yeah, a masterpiece!! Check out http://www.hoodlumpriest.net/ for even more info and music from Derek Thompson's Hoodlum Priest universe.

on the "albums you must hear before you die" here is mine. After searching years to get a physical copy of this, i paid a lot of money but it was well worth it. in a way it takes the best parts of mid 90s Pop Will Eat Itself, SPK and Art Of Noise and throws them into a blender, Hoodlum Priest's "Heart of Darkness" was a overlooked gem released in 1990, fronted by a man whom had already done stints in the Cure and SPK and then dropped this cinematic slab of sci fi industrial british rap. it has innovative use of sampled dialogue, classical strings taken straight from Shotsakovich's symphonies and jagged guitar work (it is stated they where done in one take) Sevier's british rap stylings compliment the production so well, varying topics on been a emotionless machine ("Rock Drill") replicant information age paranoia ("Tyrell") and lust ("Talk Dirty"). Every time I hear this album i hear something that wasn't there before. There is only two clangers on this album which are pretty pointless "C-Horse" and the French spoken word New Order-esque track "Sex Spirit" apart from that its a hell of a good album. The album closes with the fantastic "Deep Dance" and then the piano led piece "Rebel Angel", both masterpieces in their own right.HP wouldn't exactly do a follow to this album to this until 1998, which some of elements had distractedly changed but not for the worse.

Visionary, outstanding, perfect mixture of pop, dark and hip hop, in my top 10.

Hoodlum Priests’ 1990 album Heart of Darkness has been on my player since I heard two stand out tracks ('Deep Dance' and 'Caucasian' in a smash and crash action sports movie that year. It re-emerged from obscurity in 2006 on http://www.hoodlumpriest.net (free download) Artistically and conceptually, HOD is a dark, quite brilliantly visionary, and typically British ‘complete work’ album. Think Pink Floyd’s “Dark side of the Moon”. While the diversity of its’ ten tracks are as literate musically, it’s not as easy listening, but the complexity of sound cuts, clips, beats, rap and vocal samples make it fascinating and just as easy to picture imaginatively. Darkness’s theme and imagery is the mental angst of Orwellian police-state imprisonment, depression, media manipulation and violence. 'Rock Drill' (5.12) explores the schizophrenia within the human mind so well, that its definitely not for seriously depressed teens. The first of its’ genre that I ever heard, HOD emerged years before the real growth of ambient, dark sci-fi music began. The excellent lead track 'Tyrell' (7.15) with its’ inspired “Time to die” sample from the sci-fi fantasy masterpiece BladeRunner (Harrison Ford/Rutger Hauer-director Ridley Scott) Contrasts ? ...Tracks like the pointless but relaxing Parisian dialogue of 'Sex Spirit'. 'Walker' and psychotic 'Talk Dirty' are equally rich, but destructive, explicit, visual sound movies in themselves. Heart of Darkness tracks feature strong, unique, dramatic voice clips from film, poets and authors… some so real they might be stolen. Rebel Angel (4.58) is as weird an ending track as you can imagine, like a movie that when you exit, makes you look back over your own shoulder and shiver… wishing that it was longer or had a sequel.
