Although a fourth Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation album (Remains to Be Heard) would be cobbled together from outtakes and recordings done without Dunbar, their third LP, To Mum, From Aynsley and the Boys, was truly the final proper full-length release by the original group. Dunbar had expressed some interest in moving further afield from the blues-rock format around the time the record was done, and the addition of keyboardist Tommy Eyre (from the Grease Band) to the lineup was one step in that direction. Still, much of To Mum, From Aynsley and the Boys is pretty standard late-'60s British blues-rock, in line with the previous two albums by the band. Eyre does inject some of the arrangements with a jazzy, more R&B feel, particularly on "Leaving Right Away" and the instrumental "Unheard," the latter of which sounds like a rock band trying to do modern jazz and finding themselves a bit out of their depth.
A new version of Last. To Mum, From Aynsley And The Boys. Overview (current section).
Aynsley Thomas Dunbar (born 10 January 1946) is an English drummer. Dunbar was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Journey in 2017.
This is the third of four Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation albums from the late Sixties to be reissued – so if you haven’t caught ‘The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation’ (BADCD001) and ‘Doctor Dunbar’s Prescription’ (BADCD002), this is a good time to catch up. For the benefit of latecomers, the band led by Liverpool-born drummer Dunbar and comprising Victor Brox (vocals), John Morshead (guitar) and Alex Dmochowski (bass) had been augmented for live performance by keyboardist Tommy Eyre, famous for contributing the organ part to Joe Cocker’s smash hit version of ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’. This musical move was apparent from the very first track of third Retaliation album ‘To Mum From Aynsley And The Boys’, which you hold in your hands.
