Celtic Frost (/ˈkɛltɪk frɒst/) were a Swiss extreme metal band from Zürich. They are known for their strong influence on the development of extreme metal. Formed in 1981 as Hellhammer, the band became Celtic Frost in 1984 and was active until 1993. It re-formed in 2001 and disbanded following frontman Tom Gabriel Fischer's departure in 2008
Like its predecessor Eparistera Daimones, the album was produced by Triptykon's singer/guitarist Tom Gabriel Warrior and guitarist V. Santura and recorded and mixed at V. Santura's own Woodshed Studio in southern Germany as well as at Triptykon's rehearsal facilities in Zurich, Switzerland, in 2013 and 2014. This development thus marks the first time any musical artist has worked with HR Giger on three albums (Celtic Frost's To Mega Therion, and Triptykon's Eparistera Daimones and Melana Chasmata), and it commemorates a collaboration that has now lasted for 30 years. Melana Chasmata features Giger's dramatically mysterious Mordor VII (work no. 283, 100 x 70 cm, acrylic on wood, 1975) as a front cover and Giger's Landschaft XVI (work no. 209, 100 x 70 cm, acrylic on paper on wood, 1972) as gatefold art.

Tom G. Warrior and Martin Ain formed Celtic Frost after the break-up of Hellhammer. They first disbanded in 1987 but six months later Warrior reformed the band. Later, Celtic Frost and Prowling.
Every detail about Celtic Frost was different. Martin and I were so shocked at how the Hellhammer EP came out and, given our ambitions to become better musicians, we knew there was a lack of quality in the vehicle called Hellhammer. The night we formed Celtic Frost, we approached everything differently than the band Hellhammer had done, and we set out to form a new band in accordance with these targets we had set. So it was much more complex than two guys just changing the band name. We really wanted to form a different band. It’s very much an expression of our rebellion and our then-current state of mind. As you know, our image on each Celtic Frost album is radically different. We actually wanted to show we were changing.
His work with Celtic Frost and Hellhammer has been a huge inspiration for me and thousands of others. Rest in peace, my friend!" Though primarily a bass player, Ain contributed lead vocals to the song "A Dying God Coming Into Human Flesh," which appeared on Celtic Frost's final album, Monotheist. You can listen to it below. Indeed, Celtic Frost’s very inception was determined by Fischer’s decision to wipe his creative slate clean, abandoning the name of his first band, Hellhammer, because he worried it would limit the broader musical horizons he planned on exploring with band mates Martin Ain (bass) and Steve Priestly, then Reed St. Mark (drums).
