A lot was riding on this album, James Taylor's followup to his two big hits, Sweet Baby James and Mud Slide Slim and The Blue Horizon, which was released 21 months after the latter, a long time between records in those days. One Man Dog contained 18 tracks, some of them instrumentals, many of them running less than two minutes. A lot of it was sketchy and seemingly unfinished, and none of it had the impact of the best songs on the last two albums
Walking Man is the fifth studio album by singer-songwriter James Taylor. Released on June 1, 1974, it was not as successful as his previous efforts, only reaching on the Billboard Album Chart and only selling 300,000 copies in the USA. Until 2008's Covers, it was the only studio album he released that never received a certification as a gold or platinum record from the RIAA

Thus, James Taylor has been the object of some of the nastiest ideological criticism yet offered in the name of rock. Some of it has been a parody of old-fashioned leftist cult of the individual political criticism. Mud Slide Slim, in some ways his best written but most awkwardly performed and produced album, deals for the first time in explicitly self-conscious terms. One Man Dog follows that process to its conclusion as it sticks in the mind as a single entity, resisting initial efforts to break it down or categorize it in any particular way. In that sense it may be his best album, even though it lacks the high points of Sweet Baby James, just because it sustains the greatest degree of continuity.

One Man Band is the second live album by American singer-songwriter James Taylor, that was released in November 2007, and his first on the Hear Music label. It was recorded over several days at the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The songs (chosen for the album) span over five decades. The premise for One Man Band is that instead of having a wide array of instruments, as with most concerts, Taylor is accompanied by only his guitar, while Larry Goldings plays piano
James Taylor's fourth album was released in 1972 and it reached on the . The recording is best described as a suite of brief musical experiments, 18 short pieces strung together, some of them instrumentals. The variety of musical styles illustrate the depth and range of Taylor's composition and performance genius. The album features the hit "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight. Stylistically, One Man Dog runs the gammut from Taylor's familiar easy folk rock to country-flavored funk to smooth, bass driven jazz changes and everything in between.
