The 50th Cannes Film Festival was held from 7 to 18 May 1997. The Palme d'Or was jointly awarded to Ta'm e guilass by Abbas Kiarostami and Unagi by Shohei Imamura. Jeanne Moreau was the mistress of ceremonies. The festival opened with The Fifth Element, directed by Luc Besson, and closed with Absolute Power, directed by Clint Eastwood. The following people were appointed as the Jury for the feature films of the 1997 Official Selection: Isabelle Adjani (France) Jury President.

Cannes Court Métrage. Until 1954, the Jury of the Festival de Cannes awarded a "Grand Prix of the International Film Festival" to Best Director. On the occasion of the Festival's 50th anniversary in 1997, a "Palme of Palmes" was awarded to Ingmar Bergman, presented in his absence to his daughter, Linn Ulmann, in the presence of twenty-eight other Palme d’Or winners. The "Palme des Palmes" would later be renamed the "Palme d'or d'honneur" or "Palme d'honneur" and awarded to five other directors between 2002 and 2015 (Woody Allen, Manoel de Oliveira, Clint Eastwood, Bernardo Bertolucci and Agnès Varda), and to five actors between 2003 and 2016 (Jeanne Moreau, Catherine Deneuve,.

Copping Out A number of Cannes-doers are wondering what happened to Copland, Miramax’s much-hyped film starring Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro, and Harvey Keitel. The gritty drama, which was supposed to follow in the illustrious indie tradition of Pulp Fiction and Trainspotting, had been a strong contender for the Palme d’Or. But surprisingly Miramax didn’t enter Copland in the festival. It was completely accepted into competition, says a studio spokeswoman, but the score wasn’t finished, and we just were not going to make it on time. Brave New World Among the first-time directors.
