Album · 2011 · 12 Songs. Supersuckers frontman Eddie Spaghetti is a veteran presence on the alternative country and raw rock ‘n’ roll scene. But where his group often sent things roaring over the cliff with an internal combustion rarely matched, Spaghetti’s solo career allows him to lay back quite a bit like he’s Willie Nelson or Jerry Reed just having a good time in the studio. His cover of Del Reeves’ hit Girl On the Billboard is faithful to the original and a good example of the comfort and ease one hears in the confident playing throughout this fine album.

Like the Red Headed Stranger, Eddie has eased into a vocal style on his solo albums that communicates genuine commitment to the material without sounding like he's pushing himself too hard, and also like Willie, Eddie knows how to pick material that suits his personality when he doesn't have a full batch of originals on hand.

With Sundowner, his third solo album, and first for his fans at Bloodshot Records, Eddie unapologetically wears the love of the good times on his greasy flannel sleeve. What a terrible album from someone who use to put out such great music. Too bad the Supersuckers gave up a great thing and it seems Mr. Spaghetti is continuing in the same direction. This album has no soul. Sundowner on a career never quite actualized. Just like homework on a Sunday.

The result is an enjoyable album that is a bit more than just something to put your feet up and relax to as it contains a momentum throughout that doesn't allow it to be kept in the background–Sundowner certainly wouldn't be out of place at a party.
