Birmingham born (1947) Simon Bates lived in Shropshire until 1954, then Shropshire. Leaving the UK in 1965, Simon's first ventures into broadcasting began with New Zealand stations followed by Australian State stations for three years.
After six years of depriving the listeners of the charts presented on the VHF network by curtailing the two hours that Pick of the Pops had enjoyed down to just one for Solid Gold Sixty. By 78 the chart was being presented as a Top 40 and Simon Bates took over from Tom Browne as presenter in the April. It was broadcast in stereo between 5 and 7 pm Sunday evenings . and the wonderful presenting of Simon Bates makes this great ! thanks :) Stuart Busby - UNITED DJS2y ago. And to my knowledge this is the most complete version of the show around.
