After Sleep disbanded after constant problems with releasing their stoner masterpiece "Dopesmoker", Matt Pike went on to create High on Fire with his own twist on what had already been accomplished with Sleep. High on Fire is bass heavy and has great basslines and, has some real tasty, fiery, ember-like guitar tones and riffs from the stoner God, Matt Pike. Matt Pike took elements of his former band and added some speed and heavy metal elements to it as well to create something heavy and awesome. It all started on this album here, Art of Self-Defense

The band's first full-length album The Art of Self Defense was released on 12th Records, and released later on Man's Ruin Records. The album would later be re-released by Tee Pee Records, with two bonus tracks, as Man's Ruin Records had become defunct. In 2001, High on Fire signed a record deal with Relapse Records and recorded the album Surrounded by Thieves. On December 17, 2008, High on Fire signed a recording deal with Koch Records. On August 1, 2009, it was announced that a new album would be recorded with producer Greg Fidelman. Later that month, following the news of the new album, High on Fire announced a tour with Mastodon, Dethklok, and Converge. The tour spanned from October 2 to November 2. .In August 2009, the band went into post-production of the follow-up to Death Is This Communion at The Pass Studios in Los Angeles.

If anything, Self Defense finds Pike still transitioning from Sleep. This album is still a little blues �n' psych rock-indebted at times. Not a whole lot, but enough that you can hear an evolution. HoF is also down with the longer songs here. Not Dopesmoker long, but five out of the six songs exceed five minutes. After the epic eight-minute monster "Fireface" comes the even longer, even more furiously epic closer "Master of Fists. The name alone guarantees quality. Comparatively, the 7" tracks are somewhat of a come-down

The Art of Self-Defense features some particularly Iommian riffing and a gritty, dirty production reminiscent of Sabbath’s Vol. 4. There also reminders of where the band was heading with opener Baghdad being an intro to a slightly different guitar style and a hard introduction to Pike’s vocals which fit this style of music quite well; as if they were shouted through the annals of some kind of subterranean ba. High on Fire’s fifth foray was to be Pike’s first album recorded sober and marked a new age not just for himself, but in turn High on Fire as well. What resulted was a dirge into the depth in combination with the longstanding percussion of Des Kensel and Pike’s own pyrotechnics. What the album lacked at times was the main crushing riffs of some of the band’s earlier and even later albums, but this was most certainly a High on Fire album as heard on Fertile Green and Spiritual Rights.
