Perhaps no better example exists than Wicked Maraya and their debut album Cycles. Steel Druhm’s clinical diagnosis here is one of terminally poor timing. While Cycles sported a winning and catchy-as-fuck traditional heavy metal sound that strikes me as a darker, edgier, more proggy Queensryche mixed with Crimson Glory and Nevermore, it arrived at the very height of the Seattle grudge explosion where everything metal was forced back underground after a decade of prominence and popularity. Ironically, the Seattle sound has a muted presence on the album in the vocals and way some of the material.

Wicked Maraya then embarked on a highly successful tour of Europe opening for METAL CHURCH. The tour netted them a citation for 'Concert Of The Month' in Koln, Germany. Cycles' hit 1 on German Album Rock Radio charts, and received major acclaim in such prestigious European magazines as Aardschok and RockHard, where Wicked Maraya was voted 8 Best Newcomer of 1994 in their March 1995 READERS POLL of 298 acts. The video for the single 'Another Day' was released nationally on Warner Bros.

Wicked Maraya comes through as the heaviest and most methodical of the three. I would describe it as heavy and somewhat groovy US power metal with a slight progressive tinge. It’s an inspired offering to say the least; songwriting, riffing, singing - the whole package emits an aura of pure creativity. Did I mention it’s progressive? Well, in all fairness, don’t expect Dream Theatre. Another Day’ speaks volumes of what Wicked Maraya and ‘Cycles’ is all about, namely, dynamic and varied songwriting, soaked in heaviness. Watching Over’ has an intro and main riff that goes straight to the history books. Overall, this is a well-written and superbly produced album with simple, yet heartfelt musicianship. Seldom has the word gem been as aptly applied - don’t let this brilliant piece of an album from a forgotten time go unnoticed!
