Carpenters is the third studio album by American music duo Carpenters. Released on May 14, 1971, it was their most successful studio album, reaching number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and number 12 in the UK. The album contained the hit songs "For All We Know", "Rainy Days and Mondays" and "Superstar". It has been said that the strength of these recordings is what caused Richard Carpenter to ask his sister to front the band for their live performances instead of playing behind the drums.

The Carpenters produced some of the most beautiful pop songs of all time, and now they're being reimagined with a full orchestra. Carpenters' melodic pop, produced a record-breaking run of hits on the American Top 40 and Adult Contemporary charts, and they became leading sellers in the soft rock, easy listening and adult contemporary genres. Carpenters had three singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and fifteen hits on the Adult Contemporary Chart. In addition, they had twelve top 10 singles (including their hits). To date, Carpenters' album and single sales total more than 100 million units.

Their self-titled album, Carpenters, is for many the pinnacle of their achievements, including as it does, a fabulous medley of Bacharach songs, their 1971 hits ‘For All We Know’ ‘Rainy Days and Mondays’ and the exquisite, ‘Superstar’, written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell. With the disco explosion dominating the airwaves the Carpenters came up with Passage, an album of varied musical styles, which includes a fantastic cover of Michael Franks’s, ‘B’wana She No Home’ along with an ambitious recording of ‘On the Balcony of the Casa Rosada/Don’t Cry for Me Argentina’ from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Evita.

The UK and Australian versions did not include the bonus disc and also had a slightly different track listing; substituting "Sandy" for " Goofus ", "When It's Gone" for " (Want You) Back in My Life Again " and " Your Baby Doesn't Love You Anymore " for " Make Believe It's Your First Time ", whilst removing " Beechwood 4-5789 " and adding "You're the One" and ".
