Second Album was the second album released by British rock group Curved Air. It reached No. 11 in the UK Charts on 9 October 1971, and "Back Street Luv" became a UK No. 4 chart hit on 7 August 1971. Both variations of the album cover include a rainbow, a reference to the album A Rainbow in Curved Air, from which the band took their name.
Airborne is the sixth studio album by Curved Air and was recorded in 1976. Like their last few releases, it was not a significant commercial success. After a follow-up non-album single, "Baby Please Don't Go" b/w "Broken Lady", the group disbanded. Drummer Stewart Copeland went on to form The Police, while violinist Darryl Way and lead singer Sonja Kristina both pursued solo careers. Bassist Reeves and guitarist Jacques both later became members of the semi-pro band Big Chief.
In 1973, after "Air Cut" (with a sound hard oriented), Wedgwood joined with CARAVAN and Jobson with ROXY MUSIC. The four members of the original project made the first reunion in 1975 for a tourney (album "Curved Air Live"). Afterwards Kristina and Way carried on with drummer Stewart Copeland, bassist Tony Reeves, guitarist Mick Jacques and released "Midnight Wire". Their last album was "Airborne", published in 1976.
Curved Air's fourth album featured a very different lineup and is considered by many a weaker effort. By 1973, only singer Sonja Kristina remained of the original members, but her voice suffices to keep the flame burning. The only LP released by this lineup and the only Curved Air album with Jobson on it (he would join Roxy Music right after its completion), Air Cut is mostly remembered for introducing the future member of UK, Jethro Tull, and many other prog rock-related bands.
Whereas Phantasmagoria was all about the beautiful progression, the band's 1973 outing was to show that they could cut it among the rock groups of their day without ever sacrificing any form of the musical beauty and integrity they established with that particular album. The opening song, Purple Speed Queen, immediately displays the more brash and in-your-face styling that the band chose to shoot for with this album and it really does work well. The thundering bass lines are consistently audible and clunking away, Kirby's guitar is all over the place with some fantastic little fills.
