Jacarandas can be fickle trees, and making a jacaranda bloom can be a challenge. Even a tree that has bloomed abundantly in past years may fail to bloom

Black, Brown and Beige is a 1958 jazz album by Duke Ellington and his orchestra, featuring Mahalia Jackson. The album is a recording of a revised version of Ellington's Black, Brown and Beige suite. After a disappointing critical response to its first performance in 1943, Ellington divided the three-part suite into six shorter sections, leaving in "Come Sunday" and "Work Song", and it is this version that is recorded here. All tracks by Duke Ellington.
Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia) and poinciana (Delix regia) trees both have delicate, fern-like foliage, but the leaves on the poinciana are larger. Both are large trees with vase-like to spreading canopies that create light dappled shade. Both also grow well in urban areas and can be used in parking lots and along streets without sidewalks. Since both trees drop flower and seed litter, they are not good near patios, decks or walkways. Jacaranda blooms almost cover the delicate leaves.
The Jacaranda was actually one of the first integrated venues in Liverpool, and according to David Bedford’s interview with Pete Best, it was also the place where John Lennon first introduced the band as ‘The Beatles’ before Hamburg. After a mysterious closure in 2011 amidst a changing Liverpool nightlife landscape, many wondered if there was a future for the iconic club. Sadly the booth requires some work but if you’re reading this and have the right expertise please do get in touch. The owners of the Jacaranda are clearly passionate about music. A devotion that began with the freewheeling ideals of post-war Liverpudlians and culminated in the Fab Four still lives on inside the cosy confines of this Slater Street venue.
Duke Ellington originally wrote the 50-minute Black, Brown and Beige in 1943 for a Carnegie Hall concert, where critics dismissed it as overreaching for a jazz composer. Over the next 15 years, he periodically resurrected it for performances of excerpts or, as in the case of his 1958 Columbia album, transmuting it into what was essentially a new work.
