Music of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (a state that existed until 1991) includes the music of its constituent republics: Socialist.

Folk Music of Yugoslavia. These field recordings were made in 1969 and 1970, when there was still a united Yugoslavia. Yet the distinct cultural differences endured, at least as evidenced by the music in the excellent collection recorded by Wolf Dietrich.

New wave in Yugoslavia was the new wave music scene of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. As its counterparts, the British and the US new wave, from which the main influences came, the Yugoslav scene was also closely related to punk rock, ska, reggae, 2 Tone, power pop and mod revival. Some of its acts are also counted as belonging to the Yugoslav punk scene which already existed prior to new wave.

Given Yugoslavia's ethnic diversity and geographical position, the variety of its music is hardly surprising. Here is open-throated singing in the magnificent Slavonic choral style, decorated vocals of Balkan-Turkish ilk, ancient diaphonic duets, Gypsy songs, clarinet/violin duos, and solos for bagpipes, one-string fiddle, flute, and other ancient instruments - all of it superb.

But what caught our attention is its pop and folk music from the 70’s and 80’s. We don’t really know the artists we are reporting in this post, but their album covers are simply hilarious, authentic pieces of art in their ingenuity. Amateurish lighting, badly cut out faces pasted in place of other people, unexplainable poses and a totally flashiness are just few of the things you will find in these photos.

Recorded in 1964, Folk Music of Ghana includes music from West African tribes and religious groups such as the Akonodey and the Tigari. Polyrhythmic drumming and chanting are featured prominently in songs such as "Kumi’na Gyaemi" (Kill me or leave me), an oath-swearing initiation song for the Tigari religious cult of Ghana, as well as "Adaawe," in which women gather to sing about the day’s gossip. Liner notes include detailed notes for every track.
