Pinball (released 30 January 2015 in Germany by the label ACT Music – ACT 9032-2) is the 6th album of the Norwegian saxophonist Marius Neset. Marius Neset is one of the great new tenor sax players of our age, in the tradition of Michael Brecker and Jan Garbarek (Jazzwise). After his excursion into the bigger band format on his ACT debut Lion with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, Neset now returns to the compact quintet (with guests) for Pinball. Marius Neset, just 29, is one of Europe’s hottest young jazz talents, and this new album is another masterpiece. The folk and world-music sweep of its snaking melodies, the subtlety of its tonal contrasts and its mix of intensity and insinuation make Pinball another step-change in Neset’s already spectacular career.

I wasn’t sure whether to save Marius Neset’s latest offering ‘Pinball’ until the new Chris Potter disc had at least partially worn out, but when it dropped on my doorstep I couldn’t resist a sneaky quick listen. All in all, this is Neset’s best work to date. I can’t imagine how one could squeeze more musical energy into one disc. If you’re looking for a perfect follow up disc to Coltrane Ballads, this should not be your first choice, but it is a truly dazzling piece of work from all the musicians, especially the Neset/Eger partnership.
