Ride with me a bit, this review might come off a bit disjointed, though things will tie together I promise.Babe Rainbow released a series of brilliant singles over the years, Asteroid No. 4 was even their opening band awhile back, I’ve got the poster, so I set about seeing what I could find from this psychedelic pop band from Australia, and with the help of some kind friends I managed to collect all of their singles, even those that had never been formally released. Most of the music was rather tasty, so I was indeed looking forward to their first formal outing in 2017, which for me, save for the two songs “Cosmic Now” and “Peace Blossom Boogy” turned out to be a total silly bust, so bad in fact that the band pulled the album, meaning that unless you got an early copy, don’t bother looking. And of course this brings us to their latest, Double Rainbow, on 180 gram coloured vinyl, with hefty shipping costs from Australia. “Supermoon” was the teaser song from the release, and the number is resounding good, so good in fact that I purchased it months ahead of the album’s release, shuffling my feet and counting down the days until I had the opportunity to make my vinyl purchase … though this time out, I was a bit more circumspect, a bit more careful, and listened to every track before I handed over my hard earned dollars, and believe me, I’m so glad I took my time. When Babe Rainbow are at the height of their game they’re dancing your sneakers off with easy flowing psychedelic pop, as that’s what Babe Rainbow do so well, where the single “Supermoon” seemed to promise a shimmering hazed and harmonized album filled with good vibes just in time for your wasted summer listening pleasure. Sadly the rest of the tracks sink into avoidable easy listening fluff. Babe Rainbow are most comfortable with the sounds that harken back to the AM singles of 1964 and ’65, why they even have a song titled “Evolution 1964,” though instead of connecting with the more hip music from those years such as Cream’s “I’m So Glad” or “Pictures of Matchstick Men” by Status Quo, or even “You Were On My Mind” by We Five, Babe Rainbow has turned the tables. By no means am I one who wants more of the same from an artist, yet in the same light, I want to take steps with groups that feel sure and defined. On Double Rainbow we’re not given psych pop, it’s almost as if we’re starting over with Babe Rainbow, with all they’ve done in the past evaporating into the sun, as the album is laced with funk, seeming to channel the worst of the singles from the 60’s, singles such as “Winchester Cathedral’ by The New Vaudeville Band, “Pied Piper” by Crispian St. Peters, and other adult friendly offerings by Trini Lopez or Herb Albert & The Tijuana Brass, yet with that funky back beat. Now I’m not saying that the music sounds like those lightweight songs, it’s just that what Babe deliver reminded me of all the trashy nonsense that filled the airwaves during the heydays of the 60s, as we eagerly waited for the good stuff.Honestly, I was so taken that they’d had the courage to pull their last album due to the lack of quality, feeling that Babe Rainbow would return with a grouping of songs that would delight my ears and sparkle my afternoons. But they don’t, leaving me to keep the teaser “Supermoon” and wait patiently for their next outing, where perhaps I’ll be treated to yet another psychedelic pop single that I can morph into my collection.Bands can not release two albums of this caliber and expect to remain intact for very long.Review by Jenell Kesler
