Los Zafiros singing "Mi Oración" ("My Prayer" Spanish Version)
To those whose lives they briefly touched, Los Zafiros (The Sapphires) – Miguel Canio, Ignacio Elejalde
Los Zafiros (The Sapphires) were a Cuban close-harmony vocal group working from 1961–1970. The group was part of the filín (feeling) movement, inspired by American doo-wop groups such as The Platters. Their music was a fusion of Cuban genres, such as the bolero, with doo-wop, ballads, R&B, calypso, Bossa Nova and rock.
Though Los Zafiros were very popular and recorded a lot of material in their native Cuba in the mid-'60s, many people from the United States who know about the group are only familiar with them through the film documentary Music from the Edge of Time. This CD is not so much a Los Zafiros compilation as a soundtrack to that documentary, particularly as just nine of the 25 tracks are '60s Los Zafiros recordings. So it's not so much the recommended introduction to the music of Los Zafiros as it is a complement to the Music from the Edge of Time documentary.
Los Zafiros (Cuba Mucho Más).
Los Zafiros (The Sapphires) were a Cuban close-harmony vocal group working from 1961 until 1970. Their music was a fusion of Cuban genres, such as the bolero, with doo-wop, ballads, R&B, calypso, Bossa Nova and early rock and roll. Los Zafiros were formed in Cayo Hueso, Havana in 1961, by Néstor Milí Bustillo, with the following members: Leoncio Morúa (Kike). Miguel Cancio (Miguelito).
But beyond their music, los Zafiros are interesting to hear for historical reasons. They gained fame in revolutionary Cuba by performing a style with American origins. This fact was considered scandalous in the face of the Cuban missile crisis, but politics ultimately did not halt their accomplishments. Hermosa Habana followed in early 2001.
The folk trio Los Zafiros were a band in the late 1960s and early 1970s who played traditional South American style music, although they actually originated in Spain. Their most notable performances were on British television variety shows of the period. They made several appearances on The Morecambe and Wise Show (1968–1971) and with Benny Hill.
