Description

Hearing Bjork's vocals intertwined with that of Dirty Projectors makes me wonder why this didn't happen sooner. The fragile instrumentation on this mini-album doesn't live up to the high-end production on Bitte Orca, but it doesn't need to.

In the Dirty Projectors frontman we have a fellow who fancies himself not so much a songwriter as a modern composer, a Yale grad with one of indie rock's most divisive voices. Early DPs records carry with them ambitions so grandiose it's no wonder they range from wildly inventive to practically unlistenable- occasionally in the span of the same song. Now comes Bitte Orca, the band's best, and certainly most likable, album by a mile. Bitte doesn't actually switch up the Rise Above formula that much: Intricate (if roomier) full-band arrangements abound, Longstreth largely sticks with his clear King Sunny Ade-meets-Jimmy Page guitar acrobatics, and he's still singing his strange, loping songs with that voice.

Their sound is sophisticated, as displayed on latest album, Rise Above, which rubbed off gritty and frantic at times in their homage to Black Flag’s Damage. With Bitte Orca, we find Dirty Projectors as a reborn band, invigorated with pop sensibilities without removing the experimental indie-rock prowess that they are known for. To some, their songs may appear as a clusterfuck or rather an amateur attempt at writing a song, but the intention of changing time signatures and off-rhythm beats are all-so-delicately strung together.

Bitte Orca is the sixth studio album by American experimental rock band Dirty Projectors, released on June 9, 2009 on Domino Records. The word "bitte" is a German word for "please", and "orca" is another name for a killer whale. Frontman David Longstreth states that he liked the way the words sound together. Longstreth notes that the music contained within the album "felt very about colors, and their interaction," and that the music was written with the notion of the band, as a whole, in mind.

Dirty Projectors is the self-titled seventh studio album by American experimental rock group Dirty Projectors, which was released on Domino Records on February 21, 2017. Keep Your Name" contains a sample of "Sheathed Wings" by Dan Deacon.

After spinning heads with Rise Above, an album that reimagined Black Flag’s Damaged purely from memory, Dirty Projectors drove home everything that made them special with Bitte Orca, sweetening their tense, knotty tunes with a sinuous, almost-R&B feel. Amber Coffman and Angel Deradoorian’s spectacular backing vocals are pushed to the fore, taking the lead to great effect on Stillness Is the Move, with Dave Longstreth’s meticulous arrangements now serving his most direct and unselfconsciously lovely songs to date.
