Hold Out is a trade-off of such moments. Duff lines war with taut ones, puffed-up commonplaces with perceptions: Does it take a death to learn what a life is worth? versus She could have turned out to be almost anyone/Almost anyone - /With the possible exception/Of who I wanted her to be. Most of the time, Browne loses. Hold Out is probably the weakest record he’s ever made - an album on which all of the big decisions are carefully considered, but many of the small ones backfire

Hold On Hold Out" is a song written and performed by American singer-songwriter Jackson Browne. It is from his 1980 album Hold Out. It was released as the third single from the album, but due to its slightly over-eight-minute length, it was released as a "specially priced" 12" 45 rpm record (Asylum 11477) instead of the traditional 7", Asylum records possibly hoping to repeat the 12" airplay success of "The Load-Out/Stay" medley from the previous album. Eight minutes long, "Hold On Hold Out" is the LP's anthem, its farewell address and would-be summation.
