Inconsolable is an extremely unlikely album to have been written by Thou, generally a raucous and noisy sludge metal band from Louisiana. But, despite the bizarre nature of this release within their discography, they have pulled it off with tremendous skill and nuance. The record is completely devoid of what make Thou Thou, and I like it all the more for it. For a band whose music is almost wholly bereft of melody, they pull that off incredibly well. That part gets me every single time. The musicianship and overall songwriting on this album is also not to be overlooked.

Inconsolable is an ode to loneliness, an unfathomable solitude which Bryan Funck's harrowing lyrics express with his usually breathtaking swiftness. The Unspeakable Oath" kicks off things embarking on a grunge inspired tune led by the shockingly and beautiful clean voice of who I believe is Bryan Funck himself. Almost like in a dream state, the song ends with an alluring chant before giving way to McWilliams and Guion harmonized voices on "Come Home You Are Missed".

Inconsolable is one of three vastly different EPs doom metal group Thou released leading up to their 2018 full-length, Magus. In contrast to the noisy, experimental The House Primordial and the grunge/alternative metal homage Rhea Sylvia, Inconsolable is a venture into stripped-down, brooding folk, bringing to mind Chelsea Wolfe and Angels of Light. It's not entirely acoustic, but the distortion is left off, the singing is kept to indoor voices, and the rhythms never rise above a steady crawl.
