The Ninth Hour is the ninth studio album by Finnish power metal band Sonata Arctica. It was released on October 7, 2016 by Nuclear Blast. Vocalist, keyboardist and songwriter Tony Kakko confirmed Sonata Arctica would start recording their ninth studio album in April 2016 in several home studios in Finland, with the main recording and mixing taking place at the Studio57 in Alaveteli, Finland.

Only two years after the release of Pariah’s Child and a massive world tour, the Finnish Melodic Metal quintet SONATA ARCTICA are already back for more – their ninth masterpiece entitled The Ninth Hour will see the light of day on October 7th. Once again, the album was produced by SONATA ARCTICA themselves and mixed by Pasi Kauppinen, to create a typical yet refreshing sound that defines the spirit of the band in the year 2016. The studio work for the new record started.

Their newest release The Ninth Hour is set to be released in early October 2016. It goes without saying that my hopes for this album are very high. Opening in a conservative symphonic metal style, ‘Closer to an Animal’ unleashes epic choral and piano elements over well-toned distorted guitar lines. As we approach the half-way point of the album, it becomes clear what Sonata Arctica are trying to accomplish in this release; a well-composed collection of epic highs and calming lows, an album that seeks to explore every element that makes symphonic metal great, and – as of this point in the album – it accomplishes that with, for the most part, utter.
