Petty and his wife, Vi, founded the Norman Petty Trio with guitarist Jack Vaughn. Due to the local success of their independent debut release of "Mood Indigo", they landed a recording contract with RCA and sold half a million copies of the recording, and were voted Most Promising Instrumental Group of 1954 by Cashbox magazine. In 1957, their song "Almost Paradise" hit number 18, and Petty won his first BMI writers award.

There are 15 tracks dating from 1951-1954 by either the Norman Petty Trio or the essentially similar (with added vocalist Georgiana Veit) Norman Petty Ensemble on this compilation. It is mainstream vocal pop music of the period, given its main distinction of the swelling organ, which will strike many modern listeners as extremely dated and corny. The Norman Petty Trio had small hits with Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo" and "Almost Paradise" in 1957. Their recorded repertoire included some Norman Petty compositions, but also covers of popular standards, polkas, and country tunes, usually arranged in a smooth style that would be suitable for weddings and genteel parties and receptions. It was the organ that was the most, and perhaps only, original component of their sound, recalling the kind of accompaniment dished out by silent movie accompanists.

That same year Petty's trio also put out a few instrumental singles, the most successful of which were Almost Paradise ( 56 Billboard Top 100 in April - beaten out by Roger Williams ( 15) and Lou Stein ( 31) - and The First Kiss ( 81 in August). Petty then went on to produce and co-write several more Holly hits before everything came to an end in early 1959 with Buddy's tragic death.
