It is the first of the band’s albums with a joke intro ; in this case, the intro, Bad Ground, is 38 seconds of low-level buzzing, meant to sound as if the listener’s speakers are incorrectly plugged in. The second and fifteenth tracks are humorous untitled intros and outros to the album, respectively, with the band downplaying the recording of the album

October Rust isn't your typical heavy metal album. Type O Negative isn't going to win anyone over with flashy pyrotechnics anytime soon, and that's the way I prefer this band. There's not a single complex guitar riff on the album, but the music as a whole tends to do a lot of things all at once while still sounding deceptively simple at the same time. The latter being a much more repetitive track that hammers only a few ideas and allows them to flourish.

Steele's attempt at "pop-goth" actually works well for a while; his cynical take on goth rock's typical subject matter is in full swing over the first half of October Rust, and the band gleefully wallows in its stated commercialism by personally thanking the listener for purchasing the album at its start and finish. Unfortunately, the songwriting runs out of steam over the second half, and the cover choice (Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl") doesn't lend as much this time out; the overall entertainment value suffers as a result

The 1996 release October Rust from Type O Negative does just that. To put it more clear, if the lyrical content didn’t involve blood thirsty werewolves, odes to druidic orgies, haunting demons, suicide, murder suicide, and arson, I would put half of this CD on a iPod playlist for my 3 year old daughter to fall asleep to. Normally, I would argue that if a metal album could put a child to sleep instead of scaring the living crap out of them, it wouldn’t be effective. This is not the case here

The album is interestingly constructed and though it doesn't have a specific narrative, it flows perfectly from start to end. Its dense, doomy sound makes for an amazing listen, alone and in company. Though it touches many themes that might strike a nerve with some of us, it is definitively not a depressive album thoughout, and you will be able to listen to it without feeling down. 2 people found this helpful.
