Wetlands Preserved understands the unifying power of music-as-activism (especially when removed from the hold of corporate greed), animating its musical sequences with a charged psychedelic flair that proves as visually inventive as it is spiritually soothing (the excellence of these clips practically demands that the film’s animators go into the music video business). Though the closing of the club (incidentally coinciding with the attacks on the World Trade Center) proves an inescapably bittersweet climax, the lingering feeling of the film is one of infectious motivation.
Directed by Dean Budnick. With Mabili Kregg Ajamu, Rob Barraco, Chris Barron, Tim Barry. On February 16, 1989 Larry Bloch and a team of novices achieved something unique in a former Chineese-food warehouse just south of the Holland Tunnel in Manhattan. Not only did this inexperienced collective open a nightclub in the d Tribeca region but they created one that fused music with activism in an all together distinctive manner.
Wetlands Preserved: The Story of an Activist Rock Club, a 90-minute documentary that commemorates Wetlands Preserve, was released in 2008. Produced and directed by Dean Budnick, the film gained accolades on the film festival circuit and then aired for several years on Sundance Channel. In 2014, Wetlands NYC History: A Visual Encore, a book documenting the club's history and event lineup was compiled by Bloch's former wife, Laura Bloch Borque and released via Frog2Prince publishing. Live at the Wetlands is the first release by Robert Randolph and the Family Band. The live album was recorded at the Wetlands Preserve club in Tribeca, New York City on August 23, 2001 and released on April 9, 2002. The concert was one of the last events held at the Wetlands Preserve before it closed.
Wetlands are among the most productive ecosystems in the world, comparable to rain forests and coral reefs. They also are a source of substantial biodiversity in supporting numerous species from all of the major groups of organisms – from microbes to mammals. Wetlands can receive, store, and release water in various ways - physically through ground water and surface water, as well as biologically through transpiration by vegetation - and therefore function in this very important global cycle. Some specific examples of the benefits of wetlands to society are elaborated below. store carbon within their live and preserved (peat) plant biomass instead of releasing it to the atmosphere as a greenhouse gas. hydrologic cycle roles, receive, store, and release water in numerous ways, some wetlands maintain stream flow during dry periods, some wetlands replenish groundwater.
