The central theme is redemption through love. Wagner conducted the premiere at the Königliches Hoftheater in Dresden in 1843. Wagner claimed in his 1870 autobiography Mein Leben that he had been inspired to write the opera following a stormy sea crossing he made from Riga to London in July and August 1839.

Leopold Ludwig conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra, and Hans Hotter joins in two scenes from Der Fliegende Holländer and Die Walküre. Senta's Ballad and the colossal love-duet from Dutchman (Wie aus der Ferne), and Elsa's Dream from Lohengrin (Einsam in trüben Tagen). They show off Nilsson's versatile and accurate voice to excellent effect. It features Birgit Nilsson, and she sings very well in extracts from Tannhauser, Lohengrin, and Flying Dutchman, but the gem here is the extended passage from the end of Walkure (from "War es so schmahlich") with Hans Hotter as Wotan. The recording was made by EMI in 1957, and while there are moments where Hotter's voice loosens a bit, his singing here is much more effective than it was about 8 years later on the Decca Solti Walkure. Nilsson too is in great voice, singing both delicately and heroically when appropriate, with absolute security and lovely tone
Hans Hotter sings "Wotan& Farewell and Magic Fire Music" from Die Walküre by Richard Wagner (1813-1883) Orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival Hans Knappertsbus. Senta's Ballade from Act 2 of "Der fliegende Holländer", performed by Swedish soprano Birgit Nilsson (1918-2005). The passage is from a historical interpretation of 1957 in London with the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Leopold Ludwig. In that memorable occasion, German bass-baritone Hans Hotter (1909-2003) played the role of Dutchman. Birgit Nilsson - Senta's Ballade. Birgit Nilsson singing Senta's Ballade (Johohoe! Johohoe!) from Wagner's Der Fliegende Hollander, conducted by Leopold Ludwig.
