The Modern Jazz Quartet broke up after the concert documented on this double CD. It would be nearly seven years before the group got back together again but it certainly went out on top. Mostly revisiting their greatest hits, the MJQ is heard on this two-fer playing inspired versions of such songs as "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise," "Bags' Groove," "Skating in Central Park," "Confirmation," "The Golden Striker," and, of course, "Django.

The Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) was a jazz combo established in 1952 that played music influenced by classical, cool jazz, blues and bebop. For most of its history the Quartet consisted of John Lewis (piano), Milt Jackson (vibraphone), Percy Heath (double bass), and Connie Kay (drums). The group grew out of the rhythm section of Dizzy Gillespie's big band from 1946 to 1948, which consisted of Lewis and Jackson along with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Kenny Clarke.

The Complete Last Concert. Label: Rhino Atlantic. Forget about the MJQ's stuffy, professorial image. The could, and did, swing like nobody's business - especially in concert. First off: drummer Connie Kaye and bassist Percy Heath made up one of the greatest rhythm sections in jazz history. Then, group leader John Lewis' lean, stabbing piano lines build a foundation for Milt Jackson - the single greatest vibraphonist in history - to solo on top of. An exciting document from a pigeonholed band.
