The World Of Ruth Draper (CD). Original Cast Records.
Ruth Draper and Her Company of Characters. Draper was indeed sui generis. One of the few artists with whom she could reasonably be compared was Martha Graham. As the critic Kenneth Tynan observed, Draper, like Graham, was "condemned by the uniqueness of her talent to appear only in works of her own creation. Though others, such as Cornelia Otis Skinner, tried the art of solo performing at around the same time and also recorded their work, only Draper endures and continues to influence contemporary artists. Starting in the 1980s, Draper’s monologues were performed by an actress named Patricia Norcia, whose financial backers controlled the rights for a number of years.
The American Tourist performed by Ruth Draper (left) and Patricia Norcia (right). I’m often asked How did you become interested in Ruth Draper? When I was a student at the Yale School of Drama, a professor, who had stage-managed Ruth Draper on Broadway, asked me to perform The Italian Lesson. I had never heard of Ruth Draper. I went to the library and listened to some of her classic recordings and fell in love with In a Church In Italy. What moved me terribly was the humanity, the basic loneliness of each character
RUTH DRAPER spent her lifetime writing and performing monologues richly populated by figures of her imagination. Among her many fervid admirers was Sir John Gielgud, who said that she was, along with Martha Graham, ''the greatest individual performer that America has given u. ' Miss Draper continued acting into her 70's and died in 1956, during her final Broadway engagement. Since then, she and her monologues have lived on in memory and on records. Miss Norcia is not adept in that regard, as amply demonstrated by her closing number, a Draper trademark, ''A Scottish Immigrant at Ellis Island. With a wavering Scots burr, she arrives at Immigration and looks longingly for her fiance. Finally finding him, she is a gusher of enthusiasm.
Since 1980, Patricia Norcia has been the definitive modern interpreter of Ruth Draper's work. She and director David Kaplan have staged 13 of the Draper pieces including "The Italian Lesson," "In a Church in Italy" and "Three Women and Mr. Clifford. Ms. Norcia has performed the Draper repertory to tremendous acclaim Off-Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theater, at Carnegie Recital Hall, London's Duke of York Theatre, Munich's Gasteig and other international venues. Like Ruth Draper herself, she plays numerous private engagements and charity benefits. From the 1920's until her death in 1956, Ruth Draper moved audiences around the world to both laughter and tears with her warmly observed and hilariously funny portraits of society matrons and working class women alike.

Born in New York City in 1884, Ruth Draper began giving monologues at private parties and schools at the age of twenty-six and made her professional debut in 1920 at London's Æolian Hall.
