Album · 1984 · 11 Songs. Championed by junior high-school boys in 1984, Weird Al Yankovic’s In 3-D was the very first high-profile piece of pop-culture to lampoon Michael Jackson. Eat It, was a perfect parody of the late, great, gloved-one’s smash-hit Beat It replete with a guitar solo by Rick Derringer that nearly upstages Eddie Van Halen’s original. But to paraphrase Courtney Love, you’re nobody until Weird Al Yankovic makes fun of you. Ripping on Men Without Hats’ Safety Dance, Yankovic’s The Brady Bunch also simultaneously pokes fun at sitcom television and new-wave music.
With an album behind him, Weird Al Yankovic makes much of the improvements expected of new artists when they get a second crack at a release a year later. He premieres the concept of his own band, basically well-trimmed types that looked good in music videos. They also play very well as a unit, so whatever image augmentation was accomplished is just a side benefit.

Dare to Be Stupid, the record that swiftly followed In 3-D, in 1985, was distinguished by his affection for trash culture detritus-he covered the theme song for George of the Jungle and wrote an ode to Slime Creatures from Outer Space, the kind of 1950s B-movie that would’ve been on constant rotation on local TV in the ‘.
