Songs of the Solar Ping.
Bruce Hampton and his various groups, particularly the Aquarium Rescue Unit, played a key role in the jam band scene that began sweeping through America beginning in the early '90s. The Atlanta-born Hampton had been an eccentric figure on the Southern music circuit beginning in the early '60s; as the Hampton Grease Band, he released Music to Eat on Columbia Records in 1969. The Colonel recorded a second solo album, Arkansas, in 1984 and by 1987 the group had broken up. Hampton then formed the Aquarium Rescue Unit, an eclectic congregation adept at everything from country-swing jazz to meltdown Southern boogie and over-amped gospel bluegrass.
As a member of the Hampton Grease Band, Bruce Hampton helped record the 1971 album Music to Eat, said to have been the album in Columbia Records history. The worst selling album was a yoga instructional record. 2008 - Songs Of The Solar Ping - Col. Bruce Hampton, Ret. (Brato Ganibe Records).
Lyrics encompass snippets of interviews discussing fashion and haircuts, the rantings of an irate chef, musings on what became of the "Roebuck" in Sears & Roebuck, and a whole lot of stuff not even the most hardcore Hampton devotee could dissect - which is exactly what Hampton likely intended. You have to love a guy who did as he pleased with the wacky clutter that was rambling around in his head, knowing full well none of it would ever see the light of day on commercial radio - and surely being grateful for it.
