Lionel Leo Hampton (April 20, 1908 – August 31, 2002) was an American jazz vibraphonist, pianist, percussionist, and bandleader. Hampton worked with jazz musicians from Teddy Wilson, Benny Goodman, and Buddy Rich to Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, and Quincy Jones. In 1992, he was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1996.

Lionel Hampton: The accomplished bandleader, vibraphonist, drummer, pianist and singer  . RIP Cal Tjader, who collapsed from a heart attack and died on 5 May 1982, aged 56, while on tour in Manila. Following a three-year stint in the Navy, Tjader enrolled at San José State in the fall of 1946. It was late in 1947 when I began playing vibes seriously, he recalled. I figured if I could double on vibes, like Lionel Hampton, I was really going to prove something. By 1948, Tjader had transferred to San Francisco State College. At some point during the year, he sat in with Hampton’s orchestra and was offered a job as second drummer.
