A musical maverick who could create the sweetest pop and the densest art rock, sometimes putting the two extremes on the same album.

The Ballad of Todd Rundgren. The Ballad of Todd Rundgren is the second album by American sician Todd Rundgren, released in 1971. Most of the album's 12 tracks are piano-led ballads, with the only exceptions being the rock tunes "Bleeding" and "Parole" and the anthem "Chain Letter".

Rundgren himself wrote, produced and sang every tune on The Ballad of Todd Rundgren, as well as handling all guitars, keyboards, and vocals. I was pretty overbearing to deal with," Rundgren recalled in the liner notes to the 1999 CD release. I was also becoming very particular about arrangements, so I took a crack at playing it all myself. But I still had some dependence on other musicians. In mid 1971, Bearsville was purchased by Warner Bros. and plans were made to re-release both Runt and Runt. The Ballad of Todd Rundgren as a "twin pack" entitled Todd Rundgren's Rack Job (Catalog Number 2BV 2156) in 1973. The album got as far as test presses and album art, but was shelved as Rundgren preferred to release an album of new material.

A Cappella is a 1985 album by Todd Rundgren. The album is one of Rundgren's most unusual in that every sound is the product of the artist's voice. This approach to music making was later explored by artists such as Mike Patton and Björk.

Where Todd Rundgren’s 1970 solo debut had been a three-person collaboration with bassist Tony Sales and drummer Hunt Sales, 1971’s Runt: The Ballad of Todd Rundgren is when the artist came into his own as the all-seeing, all-knowing studio wizard. Although Tony Sales plays bass throughout the album, Rundgren handles all the other instruments himself (except for Parole, on which Hunt Sales drums). Rundgren had consolidated his control over his music, but The Ballad of Todd Rundgren generally follows the blueprint of its predecessor

The Ballad (Denny & Jean), 03:05. Be Nice to Me, 03:25.

His first album, Runt (1970), features the hit single 'We Gotta Get You a Woman' as well as the nine-minute Rock epic 'Birthday Carol'. The Ballad of Todd Rundgren (1971) features more of Todd's Laura Nyro-inspired Soul/Pop ballads, and another hit in 'Long Flowing Robe'. Of all of Edsel’s 2011 Todd Rundgren reissues, their double-disc set of Runt and The Ballad of Todd Rundgren has the most enticing bonus material. Ballad is expanded by four live tracks – Broke Down and Busted live from Carnegie Hall in 1972, then Believe in Me, Be Nice to Me, and Hold Me Tight from a live broadcast in June 1971 – but the real news is the first reissue of a scrapped alternate version of Runt that briefly appeared in 1970.
