When the time came to record their third album, the band decided to scrap the concept of their previous records entirely, burn it to the ground and start from scratch. Out of the ashes of this reinvention comes Retrograde. While Retrograde definitely marks a turning point for CTE, elements of their old sound still remain. In ‘Lucky Us’ the band is as heavy as they’ve ever been, with co-vocalists David Escamilla and Andy Velasquez’ back and forth singing/screaming meshing together perfectly.
As ‘Zero’ finally draws to a close (which is unfortunate), Crown the Empire allow a few minutes to breathe, with ‘Aftermath’. As the track begins, it feels as if it will simply be a showcase of Andy’s clean vocals, but as the bridge comes in we hear Dave’s brilliant unclean vocals again alongside some stunning guitar work, with the tortured strings combining perfectly with the vocals. Retrograde’ is a brilliant example of a band really trying to push themselves and now that I’ve got the album to listen to, a lot of the tracks will be being repeatedly aired in my playlist for the summer. Written by Laurie Cromwell.

As their first effort without such restrictive boundaries, it grants the quintet some space to breathe, allowing them to focus on songwriting without too much overthinking.
Retrograde is Crown The Empire at their best, each song maliciously hand crafted. When you break it down, Crown The Empire are storytellers for a new generation; nothing is a mistake. Every detail, element, structure, chorus, and breakdown is planned, and the album flows like the plot of a theatrical film. There’s a reason why magazines have been putting Crown The Empire on their covers and there’s a reason the band gets offered multiple tours each quarter: it’s because fans truly believe in the band and care about what they’re doing. Retrograde delivers a very focused album, each song belongs on this album and it feels more like a journey you can listen to from start to finish than just an album of loosely spun together songs. Though Retrograde may have moved Crown the Empire into a heavy Space Rock direction, they still have plenty of heavy goodness throughout their songs.
