A selection of pieces from Scandinavia played by the Studio Ensemble.

The album is mostly traditional South American dance pieces and things like that. Lots of nice rhythm sections and various drumming, etc. Has some really nice moments, especially the parts that remind me of an Ennio Morricone soundtrack to a western. I give it a 4/5, as I would have liked to heard more of those Morricone moments.

Ensemble Studios was a video game developer initially established in 1995 as an independent company by Tony Goodman, Rick Goodman, Bruce Shelley, Brian Sullivan and John Boog-Scott, and was acquired by Microsoft in 2001 and operated as an internal studio until 2009, when its development capabilities were officially disbanded. Ensemble developed many real-time strategy games, including the Age of Empires game series, Age of Mythology, and Halo Wars.

An album may be recorded in a recording studio (fixed or mobile), in a concert venue, at home, in the field, or a mix of places. The time frame for completely recording an album varies between a few hours to several years. This process usually requires several takes with different parts recorded separately, and then brought or "mixed" together. An album (Latin albus, white), in ancient Rome, was a board chalked or painted white, on which decrees, edicts and other public notices were inscribed in black. It was from this that in medieval and modern times album came to denote a book of blank pages in which verses, autographs, sketches, photographs and the like are collected. Which in turn led to the modern meaning of an album as a collection of audio recordings issued as a single item.

After an extraordinary 40-year career, the four-man Hilliard Ensemble disbanded in 2014. This 6-CD collection focuses on eras central to their wide-ranging repertoire – the Renaissance and Early Baroque, with music from England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Mexico. As the Guardian wrote of the Hilliard Ensemble’s farewell concert: What came through consistently was how deeply entangled the four voices are, even while each singer retains his own individual tone. 10.
