This fine swing orchestra is from a Kenton era of almost ideal balance between sophisticated arranging and imaginative improvising, and includes Maynard Ferguson and Shorty Rogers on trumpet, saxophonists Bud Shank and Art Pepper and drummer Shelly Manne. The band fires out chords like artillery shells, hits high brass sounds that make your teeth twinge, and generally plays a boldly arranged pre-rock dance repertoire with military-tight bravura and blasting confidence. The repertoire mixes pieces by Kenton and his star arranger Rugolo with a handful of standards, and though it's a period.
