Naturally, Milk Music deny everything. The opening 10 seconds of ‘Cruising With God’ might not be a wilful tribute to Hüsker Dü’s ‘Don’t Want To Know If You Are Lonely’, but it’s a safe bet that other people will spot the resemblance as well. In time, though, the song forges its own identity, with Coxen peeling off triumphant solos throughout. It’s tempting – and reasonable – at this point to compare ‘Cruise Your Illusion’ to ‘New Moon’, the new album by The Men, both bands being punk rockers looking to broaden their horizons. The highs on The Men’s album are higher than Milk Music’s, but ‘Cruise Your Illusion’ is the more cohesive statement. And 2013 has more than enough room for both of them.

The ethos that Milk Music represents is admirable. Even on this, their second album, they're pressing their own vinyl. They tour relentlessly to spread their own name. They call themselves "artists" without the slightest sense of doubt. Milk Music should be a band that we point to and say, "This is the standard, the paradigm, of a 'right way' to make rock music. And yes, this has little do with the actual sounds of 'Cruise Your Illusion. Caged Dogs Run Free' opens the collection with something that all the recipe-like band descriptions can't prepare you for. The band draws parallel musical tones with the Men and Titus Andronicus, but the first sound the album presents is a garage version of post-rock, hitting expansive tones with simple techniques, understanding the less-is-more concept.

At the album's last song, The Final Scene, any residual traces of romantic, youthful Americana ambition washes over, and the dreary 8-minute slow jam plays out, never overstaying its welcome and never leaving any stones unturned. Milk Music put more time into Cruise Your Illusion. Waring says the band went into the studio to record one album, and came out with something completely different. It was at the insistence of Coxen that the band spent the extra time in the studio. The result is a record that feels labored over, but for all of the right reasons. Dynamics are dialed in, guitars are honed, but the human element comes through. It’s rock and roll to the bone. It’s flower-power hardcore.
