La bohème is an opera in four acts, composed by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, based on Scènes de la vie de bohème by Henri Murger. The world premiere of La bohème was in Turin on 1 February 1896 at the Teatro Regio, conducted by the 28-year-old Arturo Toscanini. Since then, La bohème has become part of the standard Italian opera repertory and is one of the most frequently performed operas worldwide.
Based on Henri Murger’s novel Scènes de la vie de bohème, Puccini’s opera about tragic love amid the struggling artists of Paris premiered in Turin in February 1896, when it was conducted by Arturo Toscanini. Though the initial reaction was muted, the opera quickly caught on among audiences across Italy and the world and remains a cornerstone of the operatic repertoire. More Giacomo Puccini albums. Unsurprisingly, La Bohème doesn’t end well. Marcello gets together with his old flame Musetta, only then to discover that Mimi is dying. She passes away in Rodolfo’s arms and he is left utterly inconsolable. Romantic opera is never very cheerful; but in the hands of Puccini, it’s always exquisitely beautiful. Recommended Recording Anna Netrebko (soprano) as Mimì; Rolando Villazón (tenor) as Rodolfo; Boaz Daniel (baritone) as Schaunard; Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus; Children’s Choir of the Gartnerplatz State Theatre; Bertrand de Billy (conductor). Deutsche Grammophon: 4776600
