Charming album quilt with floral blocks that include 6 birds with inked details. One of the blocks is signed "From your grandmother Penelope Benedict aged 83 years". Penelope was born in 1775 so we know that the quilt was made in 1858. This bedcover is known as a Baltimore album quilt because the design was popular in and around Baltimore during the 1840s and 1850s. Each block was made and signed by a different person and, when finished, was given as a gift. This was made in New London, PA, less than a half hour from Baltimore, and has the dates 1847, 1848, and 1849 written in ink in most of the quilt blocks.
