The Complete Pacific Jazz Recordings Of Gerald Wilson And His Orchestra.

In Wilson’s case, out of the ten albums he made during his stay with Pacific Jazz, only two have ever been reissued on CD in the United States. This sad state of affairs is certainly put right with Mosaic’s new packaging of the entire output of Wilson’s Pacific Jazz sides as a leader, although the terrific sessions he arranged for Les McCann and Carmel Jones are not included here and will hopefully see their own reissue at some later date

Elegant Refined Sophisticated Enigmatic Earnest Theatrical. Gerald Wilson, Gerald Wilson & His Orchestra. The Complete Pacific Jazz Recordings of Gerald Wilson & His Orchestra. It's fitting that Mosaic was able to license Gerald Wilson's Pacific Jazz recordings rather than his earlier work from the '40s and '50s, when he was in the shadow of his compadres Ellington and Basie and Dizzy Gillespie - who he wrote for and performed with during those years. Wilson's Pacific Jazz period begins at the dawn of the 1960s - though he and Richard Bock, owner of Pacific Jazz, had talked as early as 1953 - and the eventual deal was set up through Albert Marx, who owned the recordings and acted as producer.

Gerald Stanley Wilson (September 4, 1918 – September 8, 2014) was an American jazz trumpeter, big band bandleader, composer/arranger, and educator. Born in Mississippi, he was based in Los Angeles from the early 1940s. In addition to being a band leader, Wilson wrote arrangements for Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Ray Charles, Julie London, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Carter, Lionel Hampton, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, and Nancy Wilson.
