While it's true John Zorn has made a career of being unpredictable and unboxable as an artist (and as a composer and instrumentalist), Songs From the Hermetic Theater is bound to even confound some of the faithful - to its composer's delight, I am sure. The four pieces collected here represent three homages to Zorn's actual and aesthetic mentors - Harry Smith, Maya Deren, and Joseph Beuys, and a couple of firsts (yes, amazingly enough, he hasn't done it all yet); all but one are performed by Zorn solo
And after Hermetic Theatre, you will receive more Zorn: a new dose approximately every 55 minutes. How can you possibly resist? Zorn: Songs from the Hermetic Theatre. The antidote to dying miserably. Zorn users may be pretentious assholes that hang out in converted kosher wineries, smoking overpriced cigarettes and gabbing about Kabbalah, Marguerite Duras novels, and foreign films. Perhaps the most challenging and bizarre recording in John Zorn's vast catalog, "Songs for the Hermetic Theater" consists of four compositions loosely termed by Zorn as "chamber music". Two of the pieces- "American Magus" and "The Nerve Key"- are similar in form, albeit one is termed "electronic music" and one is termed "computer music". Listening to this album this afternoon I was suddenly struck by the tragedy that occured when Stanley Kubrick died having never done a film with John Zorn. Published on January 23, 2002.

In March 2001 Zorn entered the recording studio to create four very different compositions. American Magus is Zorn's first piece of purely electronic music, and it is dedicated to the underground innovator Harry Smith, whose legendary paintings, groundbreaking films, eclectic collections (ranging from Ukranian Easter eggs, string games, found paper airplanes to cassettes of New York City ambiences) and encyclopedic mind has continued to excite, confound and inspire artists worldwide. It's the most moving and ethereal piece on the album, and ranks among Zorn's most beautiful works. Songs From the Hermetic Theater may not be every Zorn fan's cup of gasoline, but almost none of his records are: he's written so much for so many different kinds of musical groupings it's difficult to have an affinity for them all – but it is a thoroughly rewarding and enriching collection of new works.
