The Hanging Tree, Lalo Schifrin, Dizzy Gillespie.

Few jazz musicians have done a better job of composing film scores than Lalo Schifrin (Quincy Jones is the only clear exception). In this album, the Aleph label has released a new recording of Schifrin's jazz-slanted material, with Sandra Booker on vocals, Ernie Watts on tenor sax, and Nils Landgren on trombone.

On Jazz Goes to Hollywood, the composer has enlisted the services of the world–class WDR Big Band and a number of guest artists to present fourteen of his screen gems to an audience of happy concert–goers in Cologne, Germany. The result is rather a mixed bag with some themes standing quite well on their own while others are less effective.

Schifrin was as much a jazz-pop genius as ever, but on this album rock rhythms, musical satire, sound effects, and exotica are all used as camp in a way that is eerily reminiscent of Zappa's more thoughtful efforts. Schifrin being Schifrin, every cut has a distinct and catchy melody, but there are whimsical and satirical themes embedded in the music. Nowhere is this more obvious than in "Hawks Vs. Doves," in which a cheery carnival-like theme is played in counterpoint to a martial air, each interfering with the other.
