John Robert Coghlan (born 19 September 1946) is an English musician, best known as the original drummer of the rock band Status Quo. The son of a Glasgow-born father and a London-born half-French mother, Coghlan grew up in Dulwich and was educated at Kingsdale Comprehensive School. He left school at 15 to begin an apprenticeship as a mechanic. He attended drumming tuition under Lloyd Ryan, who also taught Phil Collins the drum rudiments.

John Coghlan joined Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster in their newly-formed band ‘The Spectres’ in 1962. In 2013 and 2014, John rejoined Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt and Alan Lancaster for the two sell-out Status Quo Frantic Four Reunion Tours, appearing all over the UK and Europe and reigniting the excitement of the early days of Quo. During the late nineties John Coghlan’s Quo was formed and through various line-ups has enjoyed regular gigs all over the UK and Europe. The current band consists of John on drums, with Mick Hughes on guitar and vocals, Rick Chase on bass and vocals, and Pete Mace on guitar and vocals completing the line-up.

John Coghlan joined Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster in their newly-formed band 'The Spectres' in 1962. The group went through a series of name changes, including Traffic Jam, before becoming Status Quo in the late 60s when Rick Parfitt also joined the line-up. In the years that followed, a string of chart-topping albums and an almost endless stream of hits included Pictures of Matchstick Men; In My Chair; Paper Plane; Caroline; Down Down; Rain; Wild Side Of Life; Rockin' All over the World, and many more. For Quo fans and critics alike, this time is often regarded as Quo's "Classic" period.

Prior to forming his own company, Norm Coghlan sold lanterns, camp stoves, and parts primarily to the hardware market in the United States and Canada. In 1959, he bought a small service depot in downtown Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and operated it as a private company. At that time, the newly born Coghlan’s Gas Appliances concentrated on the natural gas heating market that was growing in Winnipeg
