Vocal by Astrud Gilberto.

Getz/Gilberto is an album by American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist João Gilberto, featuring pianist and composer Antônio Carlos Jobim (Tom Jobim), who also composed many of the tracks. It was released in March 1964 on Verve Records. The album features the vocals of Astrud Gilberto on two tracks, "Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl from Ipanema") and "Corcovado". The artwork was done by artist Olga Albizu.

Getz/Gilberto made bossa nova a permanent part of the jazz landscape not just with its unassailable beauty, but with one of the biggest smash hit singles in jazz history - "The Girl From Ipanema," a Jobim classic sung by João's wife, Astrud Gilberto, who had never performed outside of her own home prior to the recording session. Beyond that, most of the Jobim songs recorded here also became standards of the genre - "Corcovado" (which featured another vocal by Astrud), "So Danço Samba," "O Grande Amor," a new version of "Desafinado. Getz himself has never been more lyrical, and Gilberto and Jobim pull off the harmonic and rhythmic sophistication of the songs with a warm, relaxed charm.

This is thee classic jazz album that brought the world to bossa nova. "The Girl From Ipanema" was an out right success due to the cool soft playing of the Tenor Saxophone from Stan Getz and the beautiful strings of João Gilberto. I've seen plenty reviews about this album and most critics can not stand Astrud's singing and wish it were left out. Granted she doesn't have the best female voice in jazz but she did add an innocent-girl feel to it. The other songs are all great and "Desafinado" became the other hit from this album and even Charlie Byrd went on to cover this track. It's simple, if your new to bossa nova jazz, buy this first. There is a story behind the earnings that the artists received from this albums success. Stan went on to buy the sister of George Gershwin's 23-room mansion, while João Gilberto earned just $23,00 and Astrud a mere $125.
